What is disinfection and methods of disinfection

Disinfection is the process of getting rid of all the unwanted microorganisms which can cause the infectious diseases and sometimes prove lethal for life.

Disinfection comes under the broader domain of cleanliness and cleanliness is incomplete without disinfecting your surroundings with an appropriate disinfectant.

You might wonder what exactly the disinfection is? And how many ways to deal with these adverse conditions? Here is the answer of all your queries.

Disinfection can be done physically and chemically with various chemicals. In the current situation, the surfaces need to be treated for avoiding the negative results of microbes. For such purposes chemical disinfectants are used effectively to rectify the bad outcomes.

Chemical Disinfectants- a key to disinfection:

Any solution that can remove the virus from surfaces or break the virus apart is effective against Covid-19 and many other viral and bacterial strains. Alcohol-based disinfectants containing at least 60% percent of Alcohol can break up the protective protein layer of viruses and bacteria. It means that surface cleaners containing 60 % of Alcohol can be used to sanitize the surfaces around you.

Bleach based cleaners are also used to remove the harmful effects of it and Hydrogen peroxide, which is milder than the bleach, is also used to sanitize the surfaces which are affected. Quaternary Ammonium compounds (QUATs) can also be used to eliminate the virus from surfaces. They must not cross the expiration date otherwise they will lose their ability to disinfect.

Chemical disinfectants are of various types e.g. Alcoholic, Chlorinated, formaldehyde, Ortho-phthalaldehyde (OPA), Phenolics, and Quaternary ammonium compounds. For varying needs of the environment and the places around you. There exist multiple methods of disinfection.

1. Chlorination:

It is an effective method of removing the wide range of pathogenic microorganisms. It is used as a primary and secondary disinfectant. Chlorination is done by chlorine gas and sodium hypochlorite solution. This solution is used to bleach paper but effectively used as a disinfectant in solution form. Chlorine gas is mostly used to disinfect water.

2. Chloramines:

In this process the ammonia is reacted with the free chlorine molecules and as a result chloramines are produced. Chloramines are more stable and long-lasting residual disinfectants.

3. Ozonation:

Ozone is an allotropic form of oxygen in which three molecules of oxygen are combined to make a new molecule of ozone. It is a strong oxidizing agent and it can kill the germs in a few seconds with its swift reaction rate. It also removes and destroys algae. This process does not change the color of the substance in which it is added and gives no odor.

4.Ultraviolet light (UV):

The inactivation of microorganisms through Ultraviolet light is also an advanced method to protect surfaces. UV light changes the biological components of microorganism and make them vulnerable.

5.Chemical methods:

  1. Surface active agents: they interact with the lipids in the cell membrane of microorganisms and destroy them e.g. Quaternary ammonium compounds.
  2. Phenolic compounds: They can also denature the proteins of microorganisms e.g. methyl phenols.
  3. Alcohols: They inactivates the metabolic activities of microorganisms e.g. isopropyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol, etc.

Three principles of efficient disinfection:

Efficient disinfection consists of three principles that are important for achieving excellent results. First, the selection of products is important because a good quality product is a guarantee of the effectiveness of the disinfection process.

Second, the protocol by which the product is applied is mainly a concern for this process. No matter how much effective product is used but if the method of application does not result in good contact of contaminated surfaces, then it will be useless.

Third, regular compliance is the key to the success of proper disinfection methods. A good quality product if applied with efficient protocols with regular compliance then it makes a successful disinfection experience.

SaniCleans fulfilling all three principles:

At your doorsteps in USA and New jersey we are providing you a solution for all of your disinfection problems. In this era of technological advancement, we are facing some real-time challenges from the microorganisms which we cannot see. These challenges are getting worse and the SaniCleans are giving promising results by providing high-quality products, efficient protocols, and regular compliance with their “Disinfect and protect” 90-day treatment.
